Leadership Training

The biggest issue facing museums isn’t individual leadership—it’s the lack of intentional leadership development. Too often, museum leaders “fall” into their roles, advancing through content expertise rather than formal training. To ensure a thriving future, we must prioritize the essential skills needed to lead at all levels. While countless books, blogs, and talks address leadership, few speak to the unique, post-pandemic shifts in museum workplace culture.

Drawing on 20 years of teaching in museums, Jenn develops and facilitates dynamic leadership trainings.

Spring Course: The Power of Curiosity in Communication

Curiosity is one of the most underutilized—and most powerful—leadership skills. In environments marked by complexity, change, and competing perspectives, leaders who lead with curiosity create stronger relationships, better thinking, and more resilient teams. Rather than rushing to solve problems or defend positions, curious leaders slow down, ask thoughtful questions, and listen deeply to understand what is really happening before moving forward.

This multi-part course explores curiosity as a practice in leadership communication. Participants will examine how curiosity shapes conversations, influences trust and psychological safety, and supports more effective collaboration and decision-making. Through reflection, dialogue, and practice, leaders will learn how curiosity shifts communication from telling to learning, from reacting to responding, and from uncertainty to insight.

  • Session one (April 15, 12-2pmEST) focuses on asking powerful questions—questions that surface assumptions, expand perspective, and invite ownership rather than compliance.

  • Session two (April 29, 12-2pmEST) centers on listening for understanding, helping leaders recognize common listening habits and develop skills that strengthen presence, empathy, and clarity.

  • Plus, optional 1-hour session (May 6) integrates these skills through practice, allowing participants to apply curiosity-based communication to real scenarios and receive feedback. This will be an open Q&A structured session to work through real scenarios.

Learning Outcomes. By the end of this three-part series, participants will be able to:

  • Understand curiosity as a core leadership capability, recognizing how habitual communication patterns can limit understanding and impact

  • Formulate powerful, open-ended questions that promote reflection, insight, and shared problem-solving

  • Demonstrate listening skills that prioritize understanding over responding or fixing

  • Identify and interrupt common barriers to curiosity, such as assumptions, urgency, and defensiveness

  • Reflect on how leading with curiosity supports their own professional success.

This series is designed for anyone who wants to communicate with greater intention, navigate challenging conversations more effectively, and build cultures where learning and trust can thrive. Investment: $275.
